Nooks are self-designed learning spaces that are set up within marginalized communities and provide its community members free access to technology, tools, resources and information. The Nooks enable learners from the communities to design their own education (DEFY). There are no restrictions to be a learner at the Nook and the learners decide what they want to learn, why they want to learn and how they want to learn.
A Nook Hub is a combination of a Nook and a growth office. It acts as a demonstration center for all Nooks in the country and region. The Nook hubs enable us to create teams in other geographies, to allow the concept to be locally customized and spread. It further helps the community to connect with other communities and people from all over the globe.
We currently have 4 Nook Hubs, all placed in Africa- Rwanda (Gahanga), Zimbabwe (Nkulumane,Bulawayo and Matibi, Masvingo) and Mt Elgon, Uganda working with locals to spread the concept of Nooks and promote self-designed learning in the existing context and create community impact.
Similar to the Nook, a “Nook+” is an inspiring, self-driven learning space that embodies Nook values, even though it wasn’t created by Project DEFY. Recognized for leading a revolution in education within its own community, a “Nook+” space will join the Nook global movement in re-imagining learning towards a future of regeneration and limitless possibilities.
