Research in Alternative Global Education (RAGE)

Philosophy of rage

Research in Alternative Global Education (RAGE) is envisioned as an independent arm of Project Defy dedicated to creating knowledge about alternative education and meaningfully involving communities in the production of knowledge.

RAGE will serve as a platform to identify gaps in the global knowledge landscape focusing on alternative education and bridge these through studies drawing from evidence generated through Defy’s programmes (for example, see Nooks).

RAGE will also provide a collaborative learning space for like-minded researchers, practitioners, and learners who wish to challenge the hegemony of dominant approaches within educational research. Through this, we hope to inspire others to join us on this journey of defiance.

What inspired RAGE

Research has been traditionally confined to institutional spaces such as large think-tanks and universities, with many of them located in Western countries. Within alternative education, a looming gap in the creation of knowledge and evidence persists in developing countries. RAGE aims to democratise the global knowledge landscape by contributing to empirically-driven research from our programmes located across South Asia (India and Bangladesh) and Africa (Zimbabwe, Rwanda, and Uganda). A greater problem we identified was the lack of representation of learners both within the process and outcome of research studies. By involving learners in the co-production and dissemination of knowledge through diverse research methods, RAGE aims to create a feedback loop, in turn driving research that is of greater relevance to learners’ lives. In this way, the platform aims to shift the balance from learners as subjects to creators of knowledge that is ultimately helpful to their own learning trajectories.

Partnership and Collaborations

RAGE is ultimately envisioned as a democratic space to generate and share evidence on alternative education. To achieve this goal, we extend invitations for collaboration and knowledge sharing to researchers, communities, and organisations working in similar areas.
Additionally, we welcome inquiries from individuals who would like to know more about our programmes and brainstorm further with us on how we can collaboratively enhance the potential and reach of RAGE’s vision for research.

Join us on this transformative journey as we embark on a mission to create knowledge on alternative education that empowers learners and communities worldwide.
