Nkulumane, a high-density suburb in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, faces severe socio-economic challenges. Most residents live below the poverty line, struggling amid hyperinflation that has driven basic commodity prices sky-high. Bulawayo, despite being Zimbabwe’s second-largest city, lags in development as many industries have relocated to the capital, Harare. Unemployment in the country is around 90%, and Nkulumane’s residents largely depend on informal trade. Recurring droughts and the COVID-19 pandemic have worsened food insecurity, leaving many families struggling to eat.
